Tinubu Is Behind My Travails -Saraki

saraki & tinubuPresident of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has narrated how he frustrated the ambition of a National Leader of their party, the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to emerge as the Vice Presidential candidate of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Saraki, in response to an article by veteran journalist, Dele Momodu, said owing to his refusal to support Tinubu’s ambition, the former Lagos State Governor has decided to take his pound of flesh by moving against him.
Saraki is standing trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged failure to declare his assets as the Governor of Kwara State.
His position as President of the Senate has also come under immense threat following the refusal of the APC to support his candidacy.
Though Saraki did not mention Tinubu’s name in the response to Momodu, he said his decision not to support the ambition of someone in the party to emerge as Buhari’s deputy was one of his many sins.
He said one of the reasons he is being hounded now was his failure to support the Muslim-Muslim ticket that would have emerged had the ambition of the person been fulfilled.
Saraki’s description fits into what transpired with Tinubu ahead of the emergence of the vice presidential candidate of the APC then.
Tinubu was touted as the chosen one after Buhari emerged as the presidential candidate of the APC.
With Tinubu as the vice presidential candidate, the APC would have had a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Saraki said this was what he stood against.
He said unlike what transpired in 1993 when the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe flew a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the presidential election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, the APC would have failed woefully in 2015.
He said this was more so that the Peoples Democratic Party had given the APC the toga of religious extremism.
Saraki wrote to Momodu: “My dear brother, most people talk about the Senate Presidency position, but this was not my only offence. I have also been accused of helping to frustrate some people’s opportunity to emerge as President Muhammadu  Buhari’s running mate. But I have no problem with anybody. My concern was that it would not be politically smart of us to run with a Muslim-Muslim ticket. I doubt if we would have won the election if we had done this, especially after the PDP had successfully framed us a Muslim party. I felt we were no longer in 1993. Perhaps, more than ever before, Nigerians are more sensitive to issues of religious balancing. This, my brother, was my original sin. What they say to themselves, among other things, was that if he could conspire against our ambition, then he must not realize his own ambition as well. For me however, I have no regrets about this. I only stood for what I believed was in the best interest of the party and in the best interest of Nigeria.”
