EFCC Quizzes Access Bank MD

WIGWEOfficials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  raided the headquarters of Access Bank Plc. in Lagos on friday, and arrested the bank’s managing director, Herbert Wigwe.

An EFCC source disclosed that Mr. Wigwe was quizzed regarding funds laundered through the bank by officials of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Our EFCC source stated that the source of some questionable funds located in the bank was also traced to former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The source disclosed that the Access Bank MD received $5 million that was routed through Zenith Bank.

The anti-graft agency, which has been carrying out investigations on alleged abuse of funds under the last administration, extended its search to the banking industry recently.

Last week, the commission arrested the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, over an alleged $115m received from the immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The bank was accused of not reporting the transaction to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit as required by the law, an allegation Fidelity Bank denied.

Fidelity Bank subsequently named the Executive Director, North, Mr. Balarabe Musa, as acting MD.

Two days ago, EFCC officials were at the headquarters of Sterling Bank where they allegedly quizzed the Managing Director, Mr. Yemi Adeola.
