He said they took the decision when they felt that the country stood at a crossroads.
Obasanjo said, “Three or four other of us from different part of the country got together and said to ourselves what do we do
“What do we need to deal with for this Nigeria of ours to become what God has created it to be. A land flowing with milk and honey, that is the intention of God for creating Nigeria.”
The former President, who spoke on Thursday at a reception held in his honour at the Government House, Yola, Taraba State, said so far, Buhari had not disappointed the country.
He said, “So far, Buhari has not disappointed us. I trust him, he will not fail Nigerians. I know he will overcome the challenges the country is currently facing.”
He, however, said Nigeria needed to get its acts right in the area of politics, governance and leadership for the country to develop.
Obasanjo also reiterated that his decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party was final.
He said that having drawn the curtain on his membership of the PDP, there is no coming back.
Obasanjo said, “In the part of the country where I come from, there is a saying that you cannot say ‘good night’ and come back to say ‘good evening’ in the same place.
“So for me, it is good night for the PDP and that is all.”
It will be recalled the former president dumped the PDP in a dramatic manner.
News Analysis :OBJ’S ROLE AS KING MAKER
During Obasanjo’s Military Administration, on September 26, 1979, the Supreme Court of Nigeria under Chief Justice Fatai Williams gave the infamous decision that “….25% of two-thirds of the votes in Kano State is 203, 460.5 votes…..”, in violation of the Nigerian Constitution.
The Nigerian Constitution stated, “…not less than one quarter of the votes cast at the election in each of at least two thirds of all the (19) states within the federation.” – which Shagari did not have.
Thus, Obasanjo ensured that Awolowo, the better qualified candidate for the Nigerian Presidency lost and the incompetent Shagri became President and as they say, the rest is history. In other words, Obasanjo foisted the incompetent Shagari on Nigerians in 1979, to make himself the biggest Yoruba force in Nigeria.
Then Obasanjo maligned MK Abiola and ensured that he never became President of Nigeria and Abiola died in prison on July 8th 1998. To prevent the pending crisis, especially in the SW, and pacify Yorubas for the death of Abiola, the Northern Military boys pulled Obasanjo from Abacha’s gulag and foisted him on Nigerians as their President in 1999. And thus began the 8-year perfidious Obasanjo-Atiku Presidential Macabre dance of shame.
To make a bad situation worse, in 2007, Obasanjo selected UMYA and GEJ as President and Vice President, respectively, and then GEJ became the accidental President, on UMYA’s untimely death.
Then in 2015, Obasanjo tore up his PDP membership Card and did everything to remove Jonathan, and in collusion with Tinubu, foisted Buhari on Nigerians.
And this is where Nigeria is. An Obasanjo whose biggest ambition in life was to be a roadside mechanic, became the President of Nigeria twice, and chose many of the Nigerian rulers,
