There are handling the shock diplomatically, but the initial idea of Amotekun as regional security for synegy and integration is gone!
Now, there are reasons to believe that Amotekun exponents, the governors have bought into idea of community policing, which means abandoning regional plan.
In a meeting with South West governor on Thursday. Succesful meeting, but he has warned against anything regional,..it must be individualistic.
The Inspector General Police, Adamu said, “The community policing model is one that will draw on the legal opportunities provided by the Police Act for the engagement of special constables who will be engaged as community policing officers under the coordination of the Nigeria Police Force toward evolving a community-focused architecture
Adamu said, “This is the second meeting we have held with the governors of the Southwest region concerning the creation of Operation Amotekun.
The just-concluded meeting discussed and fine-tuned Amotekun.
“Every state has one form of security arrangement, whether it is vigilante or neighborhood watch that is working with security agencies in the states to fight crime.
Amotekun is not different from these initiatives.
We have agreed that the community policing strategy be infused into the Amotekun structure so that policing will be the initiative of the community members.”
Adamu said the police would be part of the recruitment, training, and deployment of personnel to be assigned for Amotekun operations, adding that the initiative would work in complementary with the community policing model.
The meeting held on Thursday at the Banquet Hall of the Lagos State Government in Alausa.
At the end of the meeting, the IG and the representatives of each state okayed the Framework of South-West Regional Security Network (otherwise known as Operation Amotekun),
But the initiative will not be run as a regional security operation as initially suggested, it will be state-led effort, the IG said.
Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Akeredolu said, “The governors of South-West and the IGP have held a very fruitful discussion and it is clear now to all of us that community policing, which the Nigeria Police is anchoring, is one that will benefit all of us.
We have chosen that we will embrace community policing in its entirety.”
Already apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as well as some religious leaders are worried over the development.
Infact, they are still calling on the Federal Government to allow the South-East to establish their security outfit to be known as Operation Ogbunigwe.
But the governors of the zone adopted the community policing programme of the Nigeria Police Force for the zone.
Umahi said, “We reached a satisfactory and acceptable decision and agreement.
“The IG’s presentation was not different from “our neighbourhood watch, our vigilante operation and forests guard, the herdsmen and farmers peace community among others.
“When we saw that this is totally in tandem with what we are doing, we decided as your governors to embrace the initiative of community policing.”
But the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, appealed to the Federal Government to allow the South-East to establish their own security to take care of their challenges and peculiarities.
Nwodo said, “Mr IGP, our farms have been devastated and the herders that devastated our farms carry AK-47 rifles.
“You cannot be talking about community policing when the people you want to supervise, you do not understand their language.
“Your legal architecture doesn’t take into consideration that our governors, by the constitution, are the chief security officers of their various states, and this gives them the responsibility to protect the lives and property of their citizens.
” So when you begin to talk about recruitment, with the commander and control, and you do not share with the governors and representatives at the local areas this command and control and recruitment, this exercise is dead on arrival.”
