Rivers AG overrides Wike to enforces lockdown order, convicts 170 offenders

Office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State yesterday convicted 170 violators of the state’s lockdown order.

The offenders, who breached the restriction order in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor local government areas, were arraigned before the Port Harcourt Mobile Courts sitting at General Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekahia.

The government accused them of violating the state’s Executive Order RVSG 06, 2020, which imposes complete lockdown and prohibits human and vehicular movement in Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor local government areas.

Justice Commissioner Emmanuel C. Aguma urged the residents of the two local government areas to comply with the Executive Order and other extant regulations to avoid prosecution.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has practically taken over command on the streets of Port Harcourt enforcing the extreme lockdown he ordered on Monday, May 4, 2020, on the state capital, and sending the defaulters to quarantine, seen as prison.

Governor Wike had said :“Government will deal decisively with the residents of these areas if they are found .

The governor has barked at the deputy commissioner of police in the state, Adamu Abubabakar, saying there can be no two governors in the state. “I am the governor”, Wike declared.

“For the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) to sabotage us, that will not be accepted. I arrested those people and he had the guts to tell them to release those I arrested on the road. That is unacceptable.”

“The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice has been directed to auction all the vehicles that violated the lockdown order.

“Members of the public who are interested to buy the auctioned vehicles are to watch out for details in The Sun, The Nation and Vanguard Newspapers.”

Nyesom Wike, governor of the state, had earlier directed that any hotel or taxi found operating during the lockdown should be impounded and auctioned.

The state task force was ordered to enforce compliance with the regulation, including the closure of markets and pubs across the state.

The governor also said traditional rulers of domains where market activities continued would lose recognition and that shops opened during lockdown would be demolished.
