The death toll from accidental explosions that rocked a military camp in Equatorial Guinea and the surrounding area rose sharply on Monday to 98 dead with 615 wounded, the vice president said.
The explosions which occurred on Sunday involved ammunition stocks and explosives at the camp in the country’s economic hub Bata, destroyed buildings at the compound and countless houses in surrounding residential areas.
At the moment, we deplore 98 dead and 615 injured,” Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue wrote on his Twitter account.
Main while, President Muhammadu Buhari offers his sincere condolences to President Teodoro Obiang Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea over the explosions at a military base in Bata which has wreaked havoc in the city.
Over 30 people have been reported killed with more than 6oo injured in the mishap which also left homes and buildings in the city with considerable damages.
On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, President Buhari extends heartfelt commiserations to those who have lost loved ones in the devastating incident.
The President wishes those injured speedy recovery, adding that the thoughts and prayers of Nigerians are with the people of Equatorial Guinea affected by this tragedy.
