Lagos rejects murder suspect’s plea bargain

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has rejected the plea bargain of a chef, Joshua Usulor, who allegedly killed a lawyer, Feyisayo Obot, at the Citiheights Hotel, Opebi, Lagos.

Usulor allegedly killed the 34-year-old lawyer, who came to Lagos for a business meeting, in a bid to get money to clear his outstanding indebtedness to the hotel.

Usulor had on January 26, 2019 allegedly sneaked into Obot’s room and in the process of robbing her, killed the lawyer and made away with her phones and N26,000 after stabbing her with a sharp knife and also slit her throat.

Usulor was arraigned on one count of murder before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo.

However, at the resumed proceedings on Monday, the prosecutor, O. A. Bajulaiye-Bishi, informed the court that the state Directorate of Public Prosecutions had rejected the suspect’s plea bargain.

She said, “My lord, the defendant through his counsel, Spurgeon Ataene, had applied for a plea bargain agreement proposing a sentence of 25 years’ imprisonment. Unfortunately, the plea bargain agreement has been rejected and we will proceed with the trial.”

Justice Taiwo adjourned the case till April 28 for the continuation of trial
