(Opinion): Yes, YIMIKA…YOU SURROUND ME — Joe Okei – Odumakin
I do not have to shout! I know you are about, but l must do a tribute.
Even as l live a tribute to you.
Which one to pick of your noble deeds?
Like your many Awo caps, for an outing task…
Like throwing to me kerosene bottle
Inside giddy aluta struggle to dilute IBB tear gas…
Or, in a while, Abacha’s!
offering me cover…
Then, a silent ‘thank you’
but now, a loud tribute. Or the shock on the face
of a new father dazed
that a fresh mother was torn away from his new daughter!
Away from maternity!
I don’t know who to thank for this moment’s blank.
But thank you for the senses – our ears, sights, nostrils’
perpetual picture of you!
In these living pictures, in our children,
a whiff of you from clothes,
a piece of you from stopped clocks,
a dash on the streets where you lived,
instead of your home in peace!
Yinka, the minds you freed or tried at least to,
the wars we waged
and the bullets we braved.
Our fights without finish,
sweet squabbles domestic!
Being there for the world
but your eyes always on us.
A few words won’t do
my warrior, my eagle a tribute!
But, please, every tear I drop or the ones I stop,
Every tangled thought,
every tug at my heart,
every sudden flash
or my bouts of trance…
Every stifled scream, every current, dormant dreams…
my love, to you!
