Ex-Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi Announces Literature Prize For Youth

Bolaji Abdullahi, ex-minister of youth development, has announced the launch of a writing contest for writers based in Kwara state.

The Bolaji Abdullahi Prize for Literature is calling for submissions for its inaugural prize run. Established in February 2021, the prize will be awarded to a writer resident in Kwara State for an original and outstanding short story.

Being a writer himself, a lover of stories, and a man who cares a great deal about the progress of his community, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi has instituted the prize to serve as a platform for the discovery of new creative talent,and invariably to promote literature across the state and ultimately across the country.

The prize hopes to bring awareness to the art of storytelling, to find new voices, to encourage those already telling our stories, and to recognise and reward the efforts of those who have ventured into this art form,by awarding a total cash prize of half a million naira to the best three entries.

The competition is open only to unpublished short stories by writers who live in Kwara State regardless of their state of origin.The prize opens for submissions on the 3rd of May and closes on the 3rd of July. A longlist of 10 will be announced in September and a shortlist of 3 in October. The winner will be announced in November. The judging panel will be unveiled in due course.

◦Entries must be original works of the authors and must not have been published in any medium prior to this submission (Any medium includes social media platforms, literary blogs, published anthologies, or on any website).

◦Only residents of Kwara State are eligible to apply (by this it means as long as you live in Kwara State, as a student, indigene, worker, or in whatever capacity, you are eligible for the prize.)

◦Entries from people who do not reside in the state will be disqualified. At the time of submission, author mustn’t be older than 40.

◦Only fictional work is eligible.

◦Only one story per author will be considered.

◦The first page of each submission should specify the author’s name, residential address, title of story, phone number, email and the word count – the minimum word count for entries is strictly 2,500 words and no longer than 7,500 words, preferably less.
