Ahead of the first annual Nigerian Entertainment Industry Health Insurance Convention, Adesimbo Ukiri, MD/CEO of Avon HMO, has announced a call for collaboration between Nigeria’s entertainment and health insurance industries.

Avon HMO, a top health insurance company in Nigeria, is leading the charge to ensure that entertainers have adequate access to health care. Mrs Ukiri, who will be one of the panellists at the forthcoming convention, says the collaboration will drastically reduce incidences of premature death within the industry.

She said: “In recent times, the Nigerian entertainment sector has lost a number of its members due to health complications. The unfortunate thing is that some of these health complications are treatable. In some cases, the entertainers are forced to appeal to the public for funds to treat themselves. I think the time is right for the entertainment and health insurance industries to work together to proffer solutions to this problem. Collaboration between the industries will surely put a stop to the needless deaths.”

Mrs Ukiri expressed her displeasure that health care services were still being paid for out- of-pocket in Nigeria and called for the entertainment industry to utilise the health insurance industry.

“The reason quality health care services are considered expensive is because most people pay from their pocket, but that shouldn’t be the case. No matter their status in life, people should not suffer financial ruin because they want to access quality healthcare services, and this includes the entertainment sector. The solution lies in health insurance and we are going to use the convention to speak to the stakeholders in the entertainment sector,” she said.

She praised the organizers of the Nigerian Entertainment Industry Health Insurance Convention for putting the event together and expressed optimism that the platform will serve as a springboard for other sectors to work with the Health Insurance industry towards achieving Universal Health Insurance.

She said: “I think the organizers of the event deserve commendation for this bold initiative.

They have risen up to the challenge and that is very encouraging. We hope we can replicate this in other sectors in the country because it is only a healthy population that can attain economic and social growth and development.”

The convention is a major feature for the maiden edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Industry Lecture Series (NEILS). The eve nt, which is in partnership with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Medical Association, is expected to have key stakeholders from the entertainment as well as the health insurance industries in attendance.
