The Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has said that inadequate preparation remains a major problem of sports development in Nigeria.
He spoke when the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, visited him in Ilorin, on the sidelines of the second edition of the National Youth Games holding at the University of Ilorin.
The governor, according to a statement on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Abdulwahab Oba, said Nigeria should place emphasis on sports activities, where the country has core competences and areas of strength in order to win laurels at major competitions.
He said, “We should use sports to drive us into nationhood because sport is a leveller and performance-based, irrespective of social and economic backgrounds of the performer.”
Ahmed said sports development was crucial for youth development, adding that sports enhances mental disposition and physical capacities to cope with life.
Dalung said the National Youth Games, was designed to promote sports development through discovery of talents that could be nurtured for sporting excellence in future.
He said the event was designed for young Nigerians below 17 years in order to catch budding talents young and with the hope that Nigeria could halt the recycling of elite athletes, which has been the style in the last two decades.
