Togolese president gets approval to rule till 2030

Father spent 38 yrs in power, now his son is seeking 25 yrs…and Lawmakers in Togo have voted a constitutional change ensuring that President Faure Gnassingbe Eyadema, whose family has ruled the tiny West African country since 1967, to run two more terms of five years each to potentially remain in power until 2030 .
Gnassingbe took over power following the death of his Late father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who seized power in a coup more than 50 years ago and ruled the country like a despot. He was a dictator.
Togo’s parliament is made up of 90 lawmakers. They all voted on Wednesday to support the new law . Just one lawmaker was absent during the process. Should Faure stay in power till 2023 he would have spent 25 years in power…just as his Late father spent 38 years in power before death stopped him.
Since 1967 that Late Eyadema took over power in a coup, no other leader has emerged in Togo. Power has remained in the Eyademas family.
God help African leaders with this sit-tight mentality or syndrome. It seems a curse that most African leaders prefer dying in power than create an atmosphere for good governance where democracy thrives. Recently 81-year old Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who had been down with stroke was stopped by protesters from continuing in power after ruling the country for 20 years. Sudan’s dictator Omar Al-Bashar was disgraced out of office in a military coup after spending 30 years in power.
