A politician once described politics as a springboard. It takes you up and brings you down. In other words, no condition in politics is permanent. Let’s take a look at those whose political plane took a nosedive even as they are working assiduously or struggling to propel it back into full flight.
●Adams Oshiomhole in Edo
Retired most powerful gladiators in Edo state. Installed Godwin Obaseki before becoming National Chairman. But now dwarfed, dusted and dumped. What would have been his strong political dynasty with the smooth continuation of Godwin Obaseki in office has been docked with his ego badly bruised and battered.
●Bukola Saraki in Kwara
Had total control of Kwara politics since 1999. Was Senator and later Senate President….but dramatically lost power to the famous O TO GE political tsunami in 2019.
●Peter Obi in Anambra
Stabilised Anambra politics after the Chris Uba/Chris Ngige political tumoil. Was governor for eight years under APGA. Installed Willie Obiano….and things fell apart shortly after. He had to move to PDP to regain relevance.
●Godswill Akpabio in Akwa Ibom
Was more of an Emperor after retiring his former godfather Obong Victor Attah. Installed Emmanuel Udom and the table turned against him. He lost his senatorial seat. His ministerial appointment has not even helped his course and cause….as he is alleged to still be on EFCC radar.
●Rochas Okorocha in Imo
Shoved aside the influence and grip on the state by former governors Achike Udenwa and Ikedi Ohakim. Took full control of the state. Failed in an attempt to install his Chief of Staff and son-inlaw, Uche Nwosu as his successor. Got his plot and dream bundled out by a strong coalition force which was eventually dwarfed by Hope Uzodinma whirlwind.
●Abiola Ajimobi in Oyo
Only governor to do two terms in the political history of the state which made him highly reverred and influential. Those close to him say, he belittled the opposition and got his fingers burnt for it in 2019 election. Not even a seat in the senate was spared for him…..not even a ministerial appointment was he considered for. Worst still he was boxed to a corner in the factional NEC leadership tussle of his party before his shocking death. May his soul rest in peace.
●Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano
Once the strongman of Kano politics until he committed the greatest political error of his career by installing his deputy Abdullahi Ganduje as successor. He was literally chased out of the state by his successor who today is dreaded by all in the state after crumbling Kwankwaso’s political structures
●Orji Uzor Kalu in Abia
Was the most influential politician from Abia since 1999 on account of being governor for eight years. But once he installed his former Chief of Staff, Theodore Ahamefule Orji as his successor, he was thrown out and demystified. He became hunted by the EFCC. Not rven his return as a senator could return him to the pinnacle of Abia politics. The court outcome of his case with EFCC landed him in prison but he was saved by the Supreme Court. He is still struggling even as Chief Whip of the Senate.
●Chibuike Amaechi in Rivers
He aided Gov. Nyesom Wike appointment as Minister for (state) Education under Goodluck Jonathan administration. By 2015 gubernatorial election in Rivers, Wike outsmarted him….and ever since, the two term governor and two term speaker of Rivers House of Assembly has been struggling. Not even his ministerial portfolio could intimidate Wike.
●Ahmed Sani Yerima in Zamfara
The governor turned Senator who made Sharia laws more famous. He could not convince his followers to continue pitching tent with him under hix party. The internal wrangling within the governing party further consumed his political interests.
●Chimaroke Nnamani in Enugu
“Ebe ano” as he was fondly called during his era as governor had Ike Ekweremadu and Sullivan Chime as aides. Ekweremadu rode on his crest to became Senator and deputy Senate President while Chime was his successor as Governor. As soon as both settled into power the table turned against the two term governor cum Senator. Chime fought him to a standstill.
●Sam Egwu in Ebonyi
Ebonyi State governor between 1999 and 2007. He left office and got entangled in a power struggle to control the state with former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim who later became Secretary of the Government of the Federation. This threw him off guard. He has never recovered ever since.
●Audu Abubakar in Kogi
The Late former governor of Kogi state took control of the state once the reverred Sunday Awoniyi was off the radar. Death struck a day after election in 2015….precisely when the result of the governorship election which he was favored to win were being collated and expected to be declared. That was the end of his political dynasty.
WHOSE IS NEXT AS WE APPROACH 2023?
Like they say in politics, dry bones may rise again. Perhaps any of the fallen dynasties may spring back to reckoning and power. You never can tell. It is never over they say in politics.
