YOUNEWS understand there is abundant talents in Nigeria.
Late Rashidi Yekini set the tone for Nigerian players pursuit of Africa Player of The Year award. He was the pacesetter or Pathfinder. He won it in 1993.
Emmanuel Amunike succeeded Yekini in 1994 after a glorious season leading to Super Eagles AFCON triumph in Tunisia and a scintillating performance at USA 94 World Cup.
Then came Nwankwo Kanu heroics in Atlanta 96 Olympics. He would go ahead to win it again three years after in 1999.
But by 1997, the Prince of Monaco, Victor Ikpeba had grabbed the award following his excellent performance in Lique un with AS Monaco.
After Kanu’s second APOTY award, it took Nigeria 24 years to secure another win through Victor Osimhen.
Now Ademola Lookman who succeeded his compatriot, Victor Osimhen is at the centre stage.
