Senator Neda Imasuen, chairman of the Nigerian Senate Ethics Committee, was permanently disbarred in New York in 2010 for fraud and gross misconduct.
In 2009, he accepted substantial legal fees from a client, Daphne Shyfield, but failed to provide the agreed legal services. He then absconded with the funds and ignored multiple disciplinary inquiries. The New York Grievance Committee disbarred him on May 10, 2010.
After losing his law license, Imasuen returned to Nigeria and entered politics. In 2023, he won the Edo South Senate seat under the Labour Party and now chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions.
Recently, his committee recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, shortly after she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. The committee dismissed her claims on procedural grounds.
Imasuen’s disbarment has sparked concerns about ethical standards in the Senate, particularly regarding those overseeing integrity and accountability.
