Former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Victor Omololu Olunloyo, has passed away.
He reportedly died in the early hours of Sunday, just days before his 90th birthday.
His death was confirmed in a statement issued by Barrister Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family.
“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, mathematician and engineer, and renowned technocrat, a few days before his 90th birthday,” the statement read.
Dr. Olunloyo, who held the traditional titles of Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, was a respected statesman with a distinguished public service career.
He was the first Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Kwara State Polytechnic, among several other notable appointments.
“His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates, even as we come to grips with this devastating event,” the statement added.
The family appealed for privacy during this period of mourning, noting that arrangements for a befitting burial are underway.

YOUNEWS writes that Olunloyo, who is the father of social media journalist, Kemi Olunloyo, has survived death rumour more than once.
He was rumored to have died earlier last year, around July.Then he was seriously ill, but he survived it.
Then the family of a former governor of Oyo State, Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo, debunked the rumoured death of the politician.
Refuting the claims, the family called for prayers amid concerns over his state of health, stating that Olunloyo was then at the Intensive Care Unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
Chief Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo affectionately called (aka VOSO) was a mathematician who became governor of Oyo State in Nigeria in October 1983, holding the office briefly until the military regime of Muhammadu Buhari took power in December 1983. He later became a power in the People’s Democratic Party in Oyo State.
