Signs emerge Frank Mba may be next IG of Police

By, Isa Abdullahi

There are indications that the statement, Universe makes room for a man that doesnt give up, may come true for Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Frank Mba.

Frank may become IG after Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

Egbetokun’s tenure may end if he should retire upon turning 60 in September 2024.

Or as Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, clarified that Egbetokun’s tenure remains valid for four years, beginning from his appointment on October 31, 2023.

Though Mba is said to be content with his role as DIG and remains loyal to Egbetokun.

Mba, who was promoted to DIG in June 2023, is the most senior police officer from the South-East geopolitical zone.

The appointment of an IGP is the president’s prerogative and is not swayed by social media influence or sentimental arguments.

Frank Mba has over the years cut the image of a fine police officer. He represents the police well and if what one sees is what to go by then he should do good in that role…..if Nigeria does not or has not happened to him.

The view from the top is different from the view from the bottom.

It is believed in many quarters that he is highly-favoured chap who is actually being groomed to eventually become IG.

Or, how does one explain his unprecedented rapid promotions from ACP to CP to AIG and to DIG?

Some people will argue that the rapid promotions must have been done in order to fill the quota for senior officers from the South East in order to ensure equity, fairness and justice in compliance with the principle of Federal Character.

But, besides that, he has always been liked and favoured by his superiors, especially since he became the Force PRO.

Tinubu would likely not appoint someone below the rank of DIG as Egbetokun’s successor.

If that happens, Frank Mba and his fellow DIGs will have to retire compulsorily.

Mba, who hails from the South-East, is ambitious to become IGP.

Frank once told one his classmates in Unilag, while studying law. (Then , he was an inspector.)

He later went on to do a masters in petroleum law.

He was asked at completion of his masters if he was going to leave the police force and go into oil and gas and he responded that he was going to remain in the police force and become IG.

That was a very profound statement and over the years he has made progress up the ladder to this point.
