Opinion : Magu’s trial as monumental tragedy, with collateral damage

It is novel and strange that a probe of this type can be conducted inside Aso Rock.

To what end? Is it for special effect, humiliation and intimidation of the subject or just plain show of power?

Whichever, it is misguided and uncalled for. It’s a needless power game and a complete show of shame.

We see it as rubbishing the country’s image and painting the already dark colour darker

With his high position, the right thing would have been to just gently ease Magu out of office and prosecute him subsequently if he is found guilty of any wrong doing.

A discreet investigation would have been preferable. This is ill advised and not well thought out at all. Since the man is due for retirement in a few months time he could have been asked to proceed on pre-retirement leave and thereafter you get him prosecuted. If the head of EFCC is corrupt, which country would now be ready to do business with that agency? And will any country now be eager to return stolen funds to Nigeria when the anti-corruption agency is itself corrupt and rotten. And don’t be surprised that the man may have fiddled with public funds to finance a benefactor and a political party, which we do know is wrong. He may equally have been misled by some Naira Sharks in the corridors of power to detour from the straight paths to traverse the crooked roads. This is a monumental tragedy for both the man and our country Nigeria.
